State to streamline assistance schemes for better recipient coverage

November 23, 2024

SHAH ALAM, Nov 23 — The state government intends to streamline assistance schemes, such as the death benefit programme and senior citizen shopping vouchers, to ensure that eligible recipients are not overlooked.

State executive councillor for welfare Anfaal Saari said efforts are underway to explore automatic registration for the Khairat Darul Ehsan scheme using records from the Selangor National Registration Department (JPN).

“Previously, the death benefit assistance was disbursed based on the recipient data from the Skim Mesra Usia Emas (SMUE) and Iltizam Selangor Penyayang (ISP). Beneficiaries were also required to apply manually within six months of the death through form submission.

“Now, we aim to simplify the delivery of this aid while easing the workload of staff at state assembly service centres, who have to handle numerous ISP applications,” she said when met at Wisma Dewan Negeri Selangor here yesterday.

She added that the RM500 death benefit assistance under the SMUE will be discontinued, in line with Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari’s announcement to implement the Khairat Darul Ehsan Scheme, which offers RM1,000, as outlined in the 2025 Selangor Budget.

“This also fulfils the Unity Government’s manifesto during the last state election to increase the amount of this assistance.”

The 2025 Selangor Budget has allocated RM20 million to implement the death benefit scheme, which will begin on June 1 next year, benefitting 20,000 individuals aged 50 and above, as well as persons with disabilities.

Previously, the senior citizens’ death benefit under SMUE was discontinued in May 2019 before being reinstated in 2021.
